Volusia County government Volusia County Government operates more
than 50 parks, which attract thousands of visitors
annually. Recreational opportunities include picnicking, fishing,
boating, camping, hiking, canoeing and bird watching.
In the Ormond Beach area, Bicentennial
Park offers extended sports facilities, including tennis,
softball, basketball, and handball along with nature trails from the ocean
to the river.
South of
Ormond Beach in Holly Hill is Strickland Park,
which provides a shooting range, ball fields and a BMX track.
Lighthouse Point Park,
on the north side of Ponce Inlet, offers spectacular views of the beach
and surrounding areas from an old lighthouse, while visitors to Mary
McLeod Bethune Park near New Smyrna Beach can enjoy an oceanfront
boardwalk and riverside fishing. On
the northern end of New Smyrna Beach is Dunes Park, popular for its
observation tower and sand dune walkovers. A short drive west is scenic Lake Ashby Park, which offers
primitive camping.
For the history buff, Sugar Mill
Gardens in Port Orange features sugar mill ruins and dinosaur
statues, along with botanical gardens and nature trails.
South of Port Orange is Spruce
Creek Park, which offers a
fishing and observation pier, primitive campsites, a horse trail and other
amenities.
Mary McLeod Bethune Park,
Near New Smyrna Beach, is a park where
visitors can enjoy an oceanfront boardwalk and riverside fishing.
Smyrna
Dunes Park located on the northern end of New Smyrna Beach. It's
popular for its observation tower and sand dune walkovers.
Lake
Ashby Park, a scenic park which is a short drive west of Smyrna
Dunes Park, offers primitive camping.
Boating
Volusia County also operates eight boat ramps, including a ramp on
the Halifax River in New Smyrna Beach and one on the Tomoka River near
Ormond Beach, Volusia also has many city parks and 12 state and federal
parks.
The Halifax area is a prime spot for boating and water sports. Offshore sailing and fishing are available off the Atlantic Coast,
the Intracoastal Waterway, Ponce Inlet, the St. John’s River and Tomoka
Rivers and Spruce Creek. Several
marinas are located throughout the county. They include Marina Point (downtown Daytona Beach), Pelican Island
Marina (Port Orange), Inlet Harbor (Ponce Inlet), Daytona Beach Yacht Club
(Daytona Beach), Perry’s Marina (Wilbur-By-The-Sea), and Halifax Harbor
(Daytona Beach).
Boat
Cruises
Sightseeing, sunset dinner and
moonlight cruises are available on the Halifax River from November through
April and along the St. John's River year-round.
